Portland Playhouse presents

Thurgood

Sep 24 - 27 · Adrienne C. Nelson High School

Directed by Lou Bellamy

One man’s fight to change the country

Before he became a supreme court justice, Thurgood Marshall was a lawyer who traveled the United States, taking on cases that would help change the country.

Thurgood traces his journey through a 58-year career, from those early days as a civil rights attorney to his landmark case Brown v. Board of Education, which helped dismantle institutionalized segregation and led him to the highest court in the land.

Lester Purry (Thurgood Marshall) and Lou Bellamy (director) return for this revival, bringing their long-standing connection to Thurgood back to the stage at a moment when it feels as vital as ever.

DID YOU KNOW? The theatre where we’re performing Thurgood is in a High School named after Adrienne C. Nelson, the first Black woman appointed to the Oregon Supreme Court, and one of Oregon’s most celebrated legal trailblazers. Bringing a play about Thurgood Marshall’s life and legacy to this stage is a reminder that history isn’t distant; it lives in the people and communities that continue its work.
