The Merry Widow
Apr 19 - 28 2024 · Lincoln Hall
Is there more to life than money? Is there more to life than love? Come find out at
Portland State University’s spring opera production of Franz Lehár’s operetta The Merry
Widow.
Hanna, a poor farm girl is now the wealthiest widow in the world. The financially
destitute nation cannot afford to lose her millions, and the Baron Zeta schemes to see
her married to Count Danilo to save the nation of Pontevedrio. Hanna and Danilo
however, have their own history, in which tradition, status, and wealth won out over
love…. Hanna, now empowered with money and status is now the toast of Paris and is
pursued by every single man in town. Who will win her heart?
Come see this story retold in 1960’s Paris, where modern challenges to tradition come
to life in a vibrant, charming, and beautiful milieu. There will be something new and
delightful for both newcomers and experienced opera aficionados. We look forward to
seeing you smile.
