1928. Western Oregon.
Esther Cunningham, a sharp and brooding country girl, accepts a marriage proposal in the hopes that news of her wedding will bring her estranged brother, Benny, back home. As the wedding nears and her brother is nowhere to be found, she is drawn astray by a shadowy figure of local folklore named St. John the Gambler, who challenges her notions of right and wrong.
When, on the eve of the ceremony, she enters into a poker game with the gambler, she decides to bet herself - and irreversibly alters the trajectory of her life.
A SCREENPLAY INSPIRED BY TOWNES VAN ZANDT'S "ST JOHN THE GAMBLER."
